Do the Work of an Evangelist
Last week we had a great time of ministry in central Kansas. On Saturday I taught our Evangelism Workshop at Faith Bible College (of Faith Community Church) in Great Bend and then preached at Faith Community Church on Sunday morning. We were on staff at Faith Community for 5 ½ years as youth pastors and associate pastors before moving to St. Louis. On Sunday afternoon we drove about 30 miles Northwest of Great Bend through the beautiful prairie and farmland of Kansas to preach at Harvest Church in La Crosse, Kansas which is the same church that we pastored for 3 years during our time in Great Bend. Needless to say it was great fellowshipping with our friends and acquaintances.
The message God gave me for these 2 churches was from 2 Timothy 4:5, “do the work of an evangelist”. The body of Christ for the most part has been faithful in praying, giving and working in the local church and even doing acts of love but we have not been faithful in obeying those 6 words, “do the work of an evangelist”. Because we have not been faithful in obeying this scripture our neighborhoods, cities and nation are not saved and therefore unfortunately one of the saddest verses in the whole Bible can be applied to our cities and nation “The harvest is past, the summer is ended and we are not saved.” (Jeremiah 8:20). The reason why we hear so much cursing and foul talk when we walk down our streets, the reason why there are so many gangs, crimes, drunkenness, drugs and immorality is because the church has not obeyed those 6 words, “do the work of an evangelist”.
China was a Christian nation for 100 years before it became a communist nation. After 100 years of Christianity still half of the people in China had never heard of the name of Jesus. But when the communists took over it only took a short time for everyone in China to know of Stalin, Marx, Lennon and Mao. In other words, even though the communists did have the truth they were a lot more faithful spreading their demonic doctrine than the Christians in spreading the good news of Jesus Christ.
Let me put this in perspective, if each Christian on this earth would win just 2 people to Christ then the entire world would be saved. So let’s obey the words of Jesus in Mark 16:15, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” And remember, He is not just commanding the 5 fold ministry people to do this but every Christian is to go out and do the work of an evangelist.
